The Corkeen Webinar on Playground Design: Do safety standards kill creativity or are they helpful tools?, took place on April 28th.

Helena Menezes and Harry Harbottle were the guest speakers.

More than 250 professionals dedicated to Playground and Recreational Spaces, among which landscape architects, specialized technicians from the public and private sector and students, from 20 different countries, such as Portugal, United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, and also South Africa and New Zealand, registered.

Interaction with participants was enriched by the contribution of Tim Gill, renowned expert and strong advocate for children’s right to play freely in challenging environments, and led to a stimulating final debate,  the need to develop national and local strategies for the provision of inclusive, challenging and safe play and recreational spaces for the sake of children’s health was highlighted.

Guest speakers Helena Menezes and Harry Harbottle bring over 30 years of experience in the field of child health and play and are both actively involved in the development of European Playground standards for over 20 years.

Participants will be invited to bring their own cases or questions and interact with the speakers.

Training on Playground design and operation: European standards as a tool for risk assessment

H.Menezes Risk Vision runs professional training programmes online, both introductory for beginners and advanced training, as well as Q&A sessions.

There are different types of training programmes:

• Introductory for beginners or professionals needing an update

 

• Advanced Training for more experienced professionals or those that are looking for a network

 

• Q&A sessions with a consultancy or ‘on-the-job training’ side

BASIC TRAINING ON PLAYGROUNDS Basic training on playgrounds This 8 session-programme is targeted at beginners or professionals with some experience and needing an update on design and/or management of play areas (design, installation, inspection, maintenance,…). It offers a good overview of European playground standards – EN 1176 parts 1 to 7 & 11, as well as CEN Technical reports to be read in conjunction with EN1176-1:2017 (these are almost unknown to most standards’ users) This programme is also a good opportunity for building a network and learning from each other’s experience.

ADVANCED TRAINING ON PLAYGROUND RISK-BENEFIT ASSESSMENT Advanced training on playground risk-benefit assessment This 6 week-programme is targeted at professionals with at least, basic training and some field experience. It can be considered as on-the-job training with a consulting side. It’s a very practical and dynamic programme, and it includes homework in between the 6 online sessions as well as working groups in all sessions. We introduce, discuss and apply risk benefit assessment methods and look at case studies that participants prepare based on their daily routines.

FREE ACCESS OUTDOOR FITNESS EQUIPMENT Free access outdoor fitness equipment We also offer training on outdoor fitness equipment , as they are often placed near play areas and are used by children. There is an increasing demand for training on this topic, including the design and layout of this type of fitness areas, criteria for the choice of equipment, and risk management, based on the European standard EN 16630. During these courses, we notice how professionals need and value the discussion forum in each training programme, to share experience and to better understand and use the standards.

As we frequently receive interpretation and practical questions by email or telephone calls, we are now organizing some Q&A sessions online.
